👮🕳️Police are looking into a hole that has appeared at Sutton Walls. A report has been made of significant ground disturbance, where someone has dug a hole approximately 1.6m x 2m and around 60cm deep. This has happened sometime in the last two weeks.
What many people may not realise: Sutton Walls is private land It is a former quarry and landfill site and critically, it is a Scheduled Monument. Any excavation or digging here is a criminal offence under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 (Sections 2–42). Works on a Scheduled Monument require Scheduled Monument Consent (SMC), which has not been obtained in this case. We are currently working with Dr Rimmington from Historic England and Tim Hoverd from Herefordshire Council Archaeology.
Given the size of the excavation, this would have taken time and effort to carry out. If you have any information about who may be responsible, please contact:
PC Stefan Hawes – stefan.hawes@westmercia.police.uk quoting ref 22/4487/26
🏛️Many people are unaware of how protected Sutton Walls is, so this serves as a reminder; please respect historic sites and report any suspicious activity.
