Mobile Phones - Do's and Dont's

Resident,

While attending a road traffic collision this evening, officers witnessed several drivers treating their phones like co-pilots. Spoiler: they're not.

The details have been taken and the drivers will be contacted.

Using a hand-held device while driving is illegal. Yes, even if you’re:

Stopped at traffic lights

Queuing in traffic

Driving a vehicle that turns off when idle

Supervising a learner

Just tapping your screen while it’s offline

You CAN touch your phone if:

You’re parked safely and the engine's off

You're calling 999 or 101 in a real emergency

You're paying at a drive-thru (we see you, McNuggets fan)

You're using it to park remotely—because apparently cars do that now

Penalties include:

£200 fine

6 penalty points

Bye-bye licence if you're new on the road

A courtroom cameo, possible driving ban, and fines up to £2,500

An insurance premium that'll make your wallet want witness protection
