Urgent Alert: Protect Your Vehicle from Car Key Burglaries in Bromsgrove

In recent weeks, we here in Bromsgrove,  have seen a sharp rise in “relay” and other key-theft burglaries targeting vehicles across our neighbourhoods. These aren’t isolated incidents, you, your friends, and family could be next if we don’t all stay one step ahead.

What’s Happening?

  • Relay Attacks on the Rise: Thieves use simple gadgets to amplify the signal from your key fob, often while it’s standing by your front door, unlocking and driving away your car within seconds.
  • Smash‑and‑Grab: Even without relay devices, opportunistic criminals are breaking windows to snatch keys left in garages or hallways and kitchens.
  • Night‑time and Day‑time Strikes: There’s no “safe hour” anymore, incidents are reported both after dark and in broad daylight, often within minutes of someone arriving home.
  • Real-Life Impact

Just last week on New Road, a family returned from dinner to find their car gone within 90 seconds of unlocking the front door.

The financial loss can run into thousands, but the emotional toll, feeling unsafe in your own home, can last far longer.

How You Can Stay One Step Ahead

  • Faraday Pouch or Metal Box: Store your key fob in a signal‑blocking pouch or small metal tin when not in use. This cuts off thieves’ access to the key’s radio signal.
  • Secondary Security: Invest in a visible steering‑wheel lock or wheel clamp. These devices add precious seconds to any break‑in attempt, often enough to scare a burglar off.
  • Lock Garages and Side Doors: Don’t leave keys by the back door or in an unlocked garage. Treat your garage as an extension of your home.
  • Motion‑Sensitive Lighting: Bright, sudden light at entry points can deter prowlers before they even reach your front step.
  • Check Your Surroundings: When you arrive home, day or night, look around before you unlock. If anyone seems suspicious, pull away and call the police on 999 immediately.
  • See Something? Say Something.

  • Emergency (crime in progress): 999
  • Non‑urgent reporting: 101 or via the West Mercia Police online form
  • Bromsgrove Neighbourhood Watch: neighbours@bromsgrovewatch.org.uk
  • Every report helps build a more accurate picture of where and how these crimes are happening, and helps the police deploy resources more effectively.
